To export this animation, you would need to use an MPEG or AVI raster based format. Raster images vary in size and the amount of processing to create those frames can be considerable. The end product can create amazing results with film and video, but on the web, you’ll run into all sorts of bandwidth limitations.

If your output is a small AVI movie, that could suit your purpose, but for larger animations and effects, raster imagery is not the best approach. This where Flash and Shockwave come into play. While both are plug-ins run in your web browser, it’s important to understand the differences.

The Shockwave player has a built-in 3D rendering engine. When you build an object in 3D Studio Max or Lightwave, you can export that 3D geometry to the Shockwave format. From there, the Shockwave player interprets the data and allows you to interact with it.

Flash, on the other hand, was originally designed as a vector animation player. When you look at a cartoon in Flash, it’s composed of lines and fills, not raster imagery. These days, Macromedia has upgraded the capabilities of Flash to incorporate bitmaps, along with video and sound. But there is no 3D rendering component in the Flash player, so you can’t sent 3D geometry to it.

To maximize the use of Flash, one approach is to convert the 3D geometry to vector imagery up front, which is where the Swift 3D plug-in comes in. Another approach is to create your entire animation within the standalone application of Swift 3D.

As an example, if you built a 3D model of a film reel in 3D Studio Max, you can move it in 3D space, and create an animation of that. Once you have the animation, you would then export that to Flash, which turns the 3D image into a 2D image over a given number of frames. The animation will be redrawn as a vector animation of lines and fills. The completed animation will play sequentially in Flash, simulating 3D movement. And with vector imagery you have the advantages of file sizes and scalability, unlike an AVI file.

With raster imagery, you can generate images of excellent quality, but those textures and patterns are difficult to replicate with vector imagery.

As a plug-in, the primary purpose is for rendering and export and in 3D Studio Max, Swift 3D acts as a rendering component of the 3DS Max application and all of its functionality resides within the rendering rollout. Depending on which version of Max you’re using (4.x or 5.x), you’ll need to activate the plug-in by going to Render> Render on the main menu bar and under the Current Renderers rollout, assign the Swift 3D Max Renderer as your production and/or draft renderer.

For output, you can choose from several different formats: Swift 3D Flash Importer (SWFT), which can be read by the Swift 3D Importer for Flash MX, Macromedia Flash (SWF), Adobe Illustrator (AI), Encapsulated PostScript (EPS), Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) and USAnimation (PNT).

NVIDIA 9600GT

Some would speculate, and I would agree, that in many ways the GPU world has been pretty stale over the past 2 years or so. We haven't seen any incredibly dramatic shifts in technology or even performance, but perhaps the shift from DX9 to DX9c and then to DX10 just has us spoiled. The fact that the 8800 GTX/Ultra remains the single fastest GPU on the market since November of 2006 makes us pine for the good old days of rapid change -- at least a little.

That doesn't mean that ATI/AMD or NVIDIA have been sitting still; quite to the contrary both company are continuing to find ways to remarket and resell their tweaked products, even if they are a bit too similar to previous options. When the 8600 parts launched we said then that the performance and feature advantages over the 7600 GT were few and far between and it seemed the mid-range parts, the best selling parts, were stuck in the mud. AMD started to mix things up with the release of their Radeon HD 3850 and 3870 parts and then NVIDIA's own G92-based 8800 GT cards flipped the coin again.

NVIDIA is back again with another new mid-range part, this time under the disguise of the GeForce 9000-series descriptor. The GeForce 9600 GT aims at the price point that AMD's HD 3850 sits in, from $170-$200, and will surely push their previous 8600-series cards out the door once and for all.

Codenamed G94, you can already guess that the new 9600 GT has a lot in common with the G92 aka the 8800 GT and 8800 GTS 512MB. Built on the same 65nm process technology, the G94 takes the great features of hte G92, cuts it down just a bit, and comes up with the following features:

The interesting bits start with the 64 stream processors that run at 1625 MHz on GPU core that runs at 650 MHz. If you remember, the 8800 GT had 112 SPs while the GTS had 128; the GTS SPs also ran at 1625 MHz with a 650 MHz core speed. The 9600 GT still sports a 256-bit memory bus that is used for transfer of data between it and the 512MB of GDDR3 memory that runs at 900 MHz on the card. There are 16 ROPs on the G94 giving it more than enough fill rate to power some

high end gaming titles.

Also of note is the display support on the card: all 9600 GTs will support HDCP and have the option for DisplayPort and HDMI connections. We even have a new DVI-to-HDMI adaptor to work with here, just as we did when AMD introduced it last year. Though NVIDIA's card don't have an on-board sound controller to implement audio over the HDMI, some cards will ship with a connector to attach to your audio card for HDMI pass through.

The GPU itself is comprised of 505 million transistors and is smaller than the G92 core making it easier and more cost efficient to produce. The markings on this GPU that I tested seem to show the GPU was fabbed in the second week of 2008.

Other than those features chages, NVIDIA was eager to promote some "new" features that the GeForce 9600 GT. I say "new" like that only because these features ALREADY existed on the G92 cores of the 8800 GT and GTS, they just weren't advertised as heavily. Take this compression technology that allows more efficient transfer of data from memory to the GPU - NVIDIA is comparing it to the G80 in the graph above, not G92.

Also "new" to the 9600 GT is support for an improved PureVideo HD that allows for a new feature called Dynamic Contrast and Color Enhancement. This is a software update the existing VP2 engine that exists on the G92 cards as well, and support for it should be quietly rolling back for owners of those cards soon.

Finally, its always nice to see how companies compare themselves to the competition. With the release of the 9600 GT, NVIDIA again has a sub-$200 part that they are pushing as the main competition to the AMD Radeon HD 3850 that has been so successful over the past three months.

First, however, it's important to note what Windows 7 isn't. Windows 7 will not contain anything like the kind of far-reaching architectural modifications that Microsoft made with Windows Vista. Vista brought a new display layer and vastly improved security, but that came at a cost: a significant number of (badly-written) applications had difficulty running on Vista. Applications expecting to run with Administrator access were still widespread when Vista was released, and though many software vendors do a great job, there are still those that haven't updated or fixed their software. Similarly, at its launch many hardware vendors did not have drivers that worked with the new sound or video subsystems, leaving many users frustrated.
While windows 7 doesn't undo these architectural changes—they were essential for the long-term health of the platform—it equally hasn't made any more. Any hardware or software that works with Windows Vista should also work correctly with Windows 7, so unlike the transition from XP to Vista, the transition from Vista to 7 won't show any regressions; nothing that used to work will stop working.
So, rather than low-level, largely invisible system changes, the work on Windows 7 has focused much more on the user experience. The way people use computers is changing; for example, it's increasingly the case that new PCs are bought to augment existing home machines rather than replacement, so there are more home networks and shared devices. Business users are switching to laptops, with the result that people expect to seamlessly use their (Domain-joined) office PC on their home network.
As well as these broader industry trends, Microsoft also has extensive data on how people use its software. Through the Customer Experience Improvement Program (CEIP), an optional, off-by-default feature of many Microsoft programs, the company has learned a great deal about the things that users do. For example, from CEIP data Microsoft knows that 70% of users have between 5 and 15 windows open at any one time, and that most of the time they only actively use one or two of those windows. With this kind of data, Microsoft has streamlined and refined the user experience.
The biggest visible result of all this is the taskbar. The taskbar in Windows 7 is worlds apart from the taskbar we've known and loved ever since the days of Chicago.

Text descriptions on the buttons are gone, in favor of big icons. The icons can—finally—be rearranged; no longer will restarting an application put all your taskbar icons in the wrong order. The navigation between windows is now two-level; mousing over an icon shows a set of window thumbnails, and clicking the thumbnail switches windows.

Jump lists provide quick access to application features. Applications that use the system API for their Most Recently Used list (the list of recently-used filenames that many apps have in their File menus) will automatically acquire a Jump List containing their most recently used files. There's also an API to allow applications to add custom entries; Media Player, for example, includes special options to control playback.
This automatic support for new features is a result of deliberate effort on Microsoft's part. The company wants existing applications to benefit from as many of the 7 features as they can without any developer effort. New applications can extend this automatic support through new APIs to further enrich the user experience. The taskbar thumbnails are another example of this approach. All applications get thumbnails, but applications with explicit support for 7 will be able to add thumbnails on a finer-grained basis. IE8, for instance, has a thumbnail per tab (rather than per window).
Window management has also undergone changes. In recognition of the fact that people tend only to use one or two windows concurrently, 7 makes organizing windows quicker and easier. Dragging a window to the top of the screen maximizes it automatically; dragging it off the top of the screen restores it. Dragging a window to the left or right edge of the screen resizes the window so that it takes 50% of the screen. With this, a pair of windows can be quickly docked to each screen edge to facilitate interaction between them.
Another common task that 7 improves is "peeking" at windows; switching to a window briefly just to read something within the window but not actually interact with the window. To make this easier, scrubbing the mouse over the taskbar thumbnails will turn every window except the one being pointed at into a glass outline; moving the mouse away will reinstate all the glass windows. Peeking at the desktop is particularly significant, because the desktop is now where gadgets live. Because people are increasingly using laptops, taking up a big chunk of space for the sidebar isn't really viable; Microsoft has responded by scrapping the sidebar and putting the gadgets onto the desktop itself. Gadgets are supposed to provide at-a-glance information; peeking at the desktop, therefore, becomes essential for using gadgets.

The taskbar's system tray has also been improved. A common complaint about the tray is that it fills with useless icons and annoying notifications. With 7, the tray is now owned entirely by the user. By default, new tray icons are hidden and invisible; the icons are only displayed if explicitly enabled. The icons themselves have also been streamlined to make common tasks (such as switching wireless networks) easier and faster.

The other significant part of the Windows UI is Explorer. Windows 7 introduces a new concept named Libraries. Libraries provide a view onto arbitrary parts of the filesystem with organization optimized for different kinds of files. In use, Libraries feel like a kind of WinFS-lite; they don't have the complex database system underneath, but they do retain the idea of a custom view of your files that's independent of where the files are.

These UI changes represent a brave move by the company. The new UI takes the concepts that Windows users have been using for the last 13 years and extends them in new and exciting ways. Windows 7 may not change much under the hood, but the extent of these interface changes makes it clear that this is very much a major release
